Descending Into Greatness

Guest Pastor, Rob Johnson from Bridge Church Omaha reminded us that in God’s Kingdom, greatness is not something we climb into. It is something we descend into through humility, surrender, and service. Jesus teaches that “the greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11), and that He Himself “did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28). True greatness is not measured by success, recognition, or influence, but by a life shaped by Jesus.

The Great Commandment

In Matthew 22:37–39, Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This kind of love is not selective or distant. It reaches beyond comfort zones, bias, and convenience. Spiritual maturity is not only measured by what we know, but by how we love. Loving God and loving people are inseparable.

The Great Commission

In Matthew 28:19–20, Jesus sends His followers to go and make disciples. Greatness moves toward people. It does not remain passive or distant. The call of Jesus is not simply to believe privately, but to live publicly as people who point others to Him. Discipleship requires presence, proximity, and obedience. We never know what God may do through one faithful step toward someone else.

Great Compassion

In Matthew 9:35–38, Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus lived with His eyes up. He noticed the broken, overlooked, hurting, and lost. Compassion is more than feeling bad for someone. It means moving toward them with the heart of Christ. Real compassion costs something because love always moves closer.

Living at the Intersection

Greatness is found at the intersection of the Great Commandment, the Great Commission, and great compassion. We surrender our lives to Jesus, love God and people deeply, go toward others with the good news, and allow our hearts to be moved like His. Jesus descended into our world, gave His life for us, rose again, and now sends His Church to be a bridge of love, hope, and faith to everyone, everywhere, every day.
