July Volunteer Opportunities

Hands from Home | Back-to-School Block Party | Abide

Our friends at Abide are collecting 3,000 backpacks with school supplies for children in need. They have invited our church to help by collecting 100 backpacks with supplies. A new backpack may seem like a small gift, but it can help a child begin the school year with confidence and remind them that their community cares about them!

That's not all! As we work toward our goal of collecting 100 backpacks, we'd also like to invite you to take part in the next step of this ministry: helping distribute them in person!

Saturday Serve | The Furniture Project | July 11 | 9:45 AM–1 PM

In the warehouse, we'll be helping out with various tasks such as platform assembly, cleaning, covering mattresses, etc. There will be some lifting and moving around, so be prepared for physical activity!

ESL Volunteer

Help refugees, immigrants, and foreign-born residents in Omaha learn English, build friendships, explore faith, and experience the love of Christ through words and actions. If you're interested in teaching, serving, and especially driving, sign up today!

Volunteer Project Cheat Sheet

We say all the time: in Local Missions, we believe that we are being discipled in compassion to meet the needs of our city. Showing up is step one, but here’s the secret behind getting the most out of your volunteer experience.

1. Serve in Prayer

Volunteering can look two ways: one is showing up, doing good work, and going home. The other is engaging with God about the needs you’re addressing, earnestly seeking his goodness for the people you serve, and being a living part of God answering that prayer. Praying before you serve transforms the project from an activity to a meditation on the goodness of God. It’s prayer with hands and feet.

2. Learn About the Need

Our partners address a wide variety of needs, from homelessness to unplanned pregnancy to furniture distribution. Doing a bit of research about the need you’re volunteering to address can transform the afternoon. If you begin to understand the impact of education on our community, the value of serving with a school partner becomes clear, no matter what that service looks like.

3. Bring a Friend

Volunteering isn’t just good for our community and our spirits. It’s genuinely fun! Volunteering with friends, family, or Community Groups is a fantastic way to forge new memories. PRO TIP: plan to grab food with the group right after volunteering. Post-serve eats create amazing environments to reflect together on the volunteer project, pray together about the need, and spend quality time with loved ones.

4. Use the Materials

Each volunteer project comes with discussion questions and a mini-devotional to prepare your spirit to serve. Reflecting on those questions alone or discussing them with a friend who registered with you is a great way to prepare the heart to serve. God is doing remarkable work in our city, and the reflection questions help us see how we are aligning with God’s character and redemptive plan for our city!

There's lots to get involved with this month. We can't wait to be discipled in compassion to meet the needs of our city!

Looking forward to serving with you,
