Who Are You, Lord? (Part 2)

"Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, ‘What do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!’" -- Mark 1:23-24

Despite the confusion about who Jesus was, there was no confusion from the evil spirit as to Jesus’ deity. I found this amazing! I would not have imagined that a demon would be a reliable spokesman for who Jesus is. However, all indications point to the fact the demon clearly knew Jesus to be, "the Holy One of God!" (Mark 1:24), which indicated a special relationship existed between Jesus and God. This confession from a demon helps us better understand who Jesus is.

Not only does the demon provide us with a clear answer to the question, "Who are you, Lord?", but it also helps us to see the superiority of Jesus and His mission. He has come to "destroy them". There is no reference to a struggle or resistance on the part of the demon, for this would be futile against the One they know as the "Son of God" (Mark 3:11).

Jesus, the Holy One of God, brings defeat not just for this demon, but also for "us", that is all demons. My friends, this is good news! You see, we all have demons in our lives that need to be destroyed and Jesus is the One who can do that for us. So, answer the question, "Who are you, Lord?" with an out loud confession that, “You, Jesus, are the ‘Holy One of God!’" and let the superiority of Jesus, the Son of God, defeat the demons in your life.
