Let’s Have A Family Chat

Every so often, families need a conversation—a moment to realign, reset, and remember what matters most. That’s exactly what 1 John 2 offers: a firm but loving reminder for the family of God.

In a world filled with political noise, cultural confusion, and spiritual distraction, it’s easy to forget the core of Christian identity. The lines blur. The family resemblance fades. That’s when it becomes necessary to return to the basics—who we trust, who we model, and who we follow.

Who We Trust

1 John 2 opens with this truth: believers have an advocate—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He’s not only the atoning sacrifice for sin but also the defender of all who belong to him. When sin creeps in, the answer isn’t self-justification or shame. The answer is trust in the one who has already paid the price.

Jesus stands in the courtroom of heaven and pleads on behalf of those who believe. His advocacy is rooted not in what anyone has done, but in what he has already finished. Trusting Jesus means resting in his righteousness, not striving for personal perfection.

Reflection: Where does confidence rest—in personal performance or in Christ’s completed work?

Who We Model

According to 1 John 2:6, “Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” That means love must replace hate, light must replace darkness, and unity must replace division.

There is no room in God’s family for harboring resentment or hatred toward fellow believers. True fellowship requires love—the kind of love Jesus demonstrated and commanded. This isn’t optional. It’s how the world identifies the people of God.

Reflection: Does behavior mirror the love and light of Jesus, or the hostility of the world?

Who We Follow

John writes with urgency: “Do not love the world or anything in the world.” The pull of culture is strong—chasing status, power, appearance, or control. But those patterns do not last. The one who does the will of God, however, lives forever.

Following Jesus means declaring allegiance to him above all else. In a world that encourages self-promotion and self-preservation, Jesus calls for self-denial and sacrificial love. It is a different way. A better way. The only way that leads to life.

Reflection: Is life shaped more by temporary trends or eternal truths?

Living This Out

The message of 1 John 2 remains just as relevant today as when it was written. The church still needs to be reminded of its identity. Not through performance or appearance—but through trust, love, and allegiance.

Here are a few practical checkpoints:

  • Social media posts: Do they reflect kingdom values or worldly noise?
  • Spending habits: Do they reveal a heart anchored in heaven or on earth?
  • Relationships: Are they marked by love and forgiveness, or rivalry and resentment?
  • Conversations: Do they spread hope or stir cynicism?
  • Allegiance: Is trust placed in self-justification or in the Advocate who stands before the Father?

This is the family of God. And when the world sees that family resemblance, they get a glimpse of Jesus.

Trust him. Model him. Follow him. Always.
