Gospel of John Overview

Mark Ashton
Lead Minister

It often feels simple to flip on a light switch. You walk into a room, hit the switch, and instantly everything changes. Light fills the space and you move on without thinking twice. But behind that simple moment is a complex system of wires, circuits, and power you rarely see. The Gospel of John works the same way. Many know a few familiar verses like John 3:16, but beneath those surface moments is a depth and brilliance that most never fully explore.

John is not just trying to inform you about Jesus. He is inviting you to see Jesus. Throughout the book, light becomes a central image. Light represents truth, life, and goodness, while darkness represents confusion, sin, and separation. And the claim John builds toward is clear: Jesus is not just someone who brings light, He is the light. This is an invitation to move out of spiritual darkness and into clarity, not just once, but daily.

AUTHORSHIP

Part of what makes this Gospel so powerful is the person behind it. John never even names himself directly. Instead, he refers to himself as “the disciple Jesus loved.” It is humble, yet deeply personal. He was likely the youngest of the disciples, part of Jesus’ inner circle, and one of the few who stayed all the way to the cross.

By the time John writes this Gospel around AD 85, he has spent over 50 years reflecting on the life of Jesus. The other disciples are gone or scattered. The temple has been destroyed. And John, now in Ephesus, becomes a living witness to the story. This Gospel is not rushed. It is curated. It is intentional. It is his life’s work.

John himself tells us why he wrote it:

“...these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30–31)

Everything in this book is selected with purpose. Not to give you everything, but to give you exactly what you need to believe and experience life.

THE 7 THEMES

As you move through John, there are threads woven through every chapter that help you understand what you are seeing. These themes are not random. They are intentional pathways to deeper understanding.

Light and Darkness
This contrast runs everywhere. Jesus exposes what is false and illuminates what is true. The question becomes: are you walking in the light, or hiding in the dark?

Israel Fulfilled
John constantly points back to the Old Testament. Festivals, symbols, and promises all find their fulfillment in Jesus. He is not replacing Israel’s story. He is completing it.

Believe
John uses the word for belief nearly 100 times. But belief is not just a moment. It is a movement. It is not checking a box, it is stepping into a relationship. It is active trust that grows over time.

Misunderstanding
People consistently misunderstand Jesus. “Born again.” “Living water.” “Eat my flesh.” Confusion is part of the journey. But John shows how clarity comes to those who keep leaning in.

The Holy Spirit
Especially in the second half, we see the promise of the Helper. Jesus is preparing His followers for life after His physical presence, showing that God will not leave them alone.

Signs of Deity
John doesn’t just call them miracles. He calls them signs. Each one is a deliberate act pointing to who Jesus truly is. There are seven major signs, each revealing His divine identity.

The Hour
Throughout the Gospel, Jesus speaks of “His hour.” A moment that is coming. Everything is building toward it. The cross is not random. It is the centerpiece of the story.

THE “I AM” REVELATION

Threaded into these themes are the powerful “I AM” statements. Echoing God’s name revealed in Exodus, Jesus makes bold claims about His identity:

He is the Bread of Life for the hungry.
The Light of the World for those in darkness.
The Good Shepherd for the vulnerable.
The Resurrection and the Life for those facing death.
The Way, the Truth, and the Life for the lost.
The True Vine for the fruitless.

Jesus does not just point to answers. He is the answer.

Every human need finds its fulfillment in Him.

THE INVITATION

This Gospel is not just meant to be read. It is meant to be entered.

You can skim it like flipping a light switch, or you can step into the depth behind it. One year from now, you will either know Jesus more deeply than ever, or you will remain where you are. The difference is engagement.

The invitation is simple and powerful:
Start with one chapter a day.
Listen, read, reflect, highlight.
Immerse yourself in the life of Jesus.

Because you cannot imitate someone you do not know. And you cannot truly know Jesus without spending time with Him.

You may not even realize how much you need this.
If you are hungry, He is the Bread.
If you are in darkness, He is the Light.
If you are lost, He is the Way.

The Gospel of John is an invitation to move from a moment of belief to a lifetime of encounter. Step into the light, and see Jesus more clearly than ever before.
