Know the Porn Stats

Every quarter I receive Fireproof magazine, a publication associated with Fireproof Ministries and XXX Church. They have been at the forefront of responding to the porn threat in a direct and Christ-like way. In their recent publication, they provide some updated stats about porn, and sexual abuse, in America. I know we hear these stats a lot, but I think it is good to be reminded of the reality that adults, parents and kids face on a daily basis. As well, if you know my story about recovering from addiction, you know how important it is to deal with this issue instead of brushing it aside.

  • The average age of first exposure to internet pornography is age 11.
  • 90% of children ages 8 to 16 have been exposed to online pornography.
  • 79% of accidental access to pornography occurs in the home.
  • Only 27% of youth who encountered unwanted sexual content told a parent or guardian.
  • 93% of teens are online and they spend more than 72 hours a week using electronic media like the internet, cell phones, television, music and video games.
  • 90% of 8-16 year-olds have viewed porn online, most while doing homework.
  • Only 3% of adult web sites require age verification.
  • Fewer than half (48%) of parents set parental controls on the family computer.
  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before adulthood. The majority of this abuse is perpetrated by a family member of someone the victim trusts.
  • 1 in 7 kids receives a sexual socilicitation while online.
  • Over half of kids sexually soclicted online are asked to send a picture; 27% of pictures are sexually-oriented in nature.

This can seem daunting, but thankfully Christ Community Church is committed to addressing this. We have numerous resources people can use and go to for help and support. Check out The HUB for more information. And, you can always talk with one of the pastors, or leaders, here at CCC.
