Why Membership?

Church membership is a passionate reflection of a personal commitment. It is a stake in the ground saying, “I am all-in!” Here are the four declarations of a member.

MEMBERSHIP DECLARES, “I AM FAMILY.”

Members declare, “I am all in with this family.”

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
—Acts 2:42–47

As a member, I pray with these people. I care for them. I am known by them. We worship together. I will be there for them in good times and bad—and can count on the same in return. We do Sundays, holidays, and other days together. We pool our resources to care for the poor and accomplish Jesus’ mission.

MEMBERSHIP DECLARES, “I AGREE.”

Agreeing together is a powerful spiritual force.

Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.
—Matthew 18:19

To choose membership is to agree with the mission of the church, “making disciples of Jesus for kingdom impact.” It is agreeing on basic tenets about God, the Bible, and the faith we profess. It is agreeing to work in harmony with the church’s Governing Board for the Kingdom of God in our generation.

MEMBERSHIP DECLARES, “I AM UNDER AUTHORITY.”

The laws of the United States, the handbook of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, and the bylaws of Christ Community Church all require a defined membership of people who have legal standing and moral authority to represent the church body.

Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
—Hebrews 13:17

Members have the humble privilege of legally “being the church” under the authorities that God has placed over us. This is not simply submission to authority, but also includes authority over the Governing Board selection, bylaws, and budget of the church.

MEMBERSHIP DECLARES, “I AM WILLING.”

A member is willing to be in authentic community, give, serve, and reach one more.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
—Galatians 6:9

Membership is active, not passive. It moves the believer to engage as a team in an impactful way, more than any one person could do alone. In your application, you shared your willingness to be in community, serve, give, worship, and reach others.
